Natuurlijk & Duurzaam: De zoektocht naar duurzaam en innovatief materiaalgebruik heeft geleid tot een nieuwe ontdekking: Yak. De wol van dit Tibetaanse dier levert na verwerking een cashmire-zachte stof op. Het materiaal is ideaal, omdat het in tegenstelling tot andere wolsoorten uitstekend wasbaar is in de wasmachine. De yak is het symbool van Tibet. Tibetaanse nomaden noemen hun yaks ook wel  ‘nor’ wat zoveel betekent als ‘juweel’ of ‘waardevol’. Zijn ongelooflijke kracht en  vermogen om in de hoogalpiene gebieden  te kunnen overleven, hebben ervoor gezorgd dat de yak een onmisbare rol in het leven van veel bergnomadenstammen speelt. Letterlijk alles wordt gebruikt: vlees, huid, wol, melk en mest. De wol die gebruikt wordt voor Snooshy is afkomstig van een co-operatie van 2.600 Tibetanen, woonachtig in de Hei Ma He Village in de provincie Qinghai. Waarom Yak? Natuurlijk Yak!

Productie: Snooshy wordt handgebreid door een cooperatie vrouwen op Shong Ming Island, Shanghai/China. Aan elke Snooshy hangt bovendien een kaartje met daarop de naam van de breister. Natuurlijk wordt er gewerkt volgens de principes van Fairtrade.

Recycle: Recycling betekent hergebruik. Het gaat om het terugwinnen en opnieuw voor gebruik geschikt maken van grondstoffen uit afval. Recycling heeft verschillende voordelen. Het bespaart grondstoffen en energie. Er komen veel minder schadelijke stoffen in het milieu terecht. En wordt minder afval op de vuilnisbelt gestort of in verbrandingsovens verbrand. Recycling scheelt de burger in de portemonnee. Elke kilo afval die níet in de verbrandingsoven verdwijnt, bespaart 9 eurocent. Dat komt tot uiting in de hoogte van de afvalstoffenheffing die burgers betalen. De gemeente berekent de kosten van de afvalverwijdering volledig door aan alle huishoudens.
 Het leuke van hergebruik is bovendien dat het een uniek product voortbrengt. Niemand anders kan die leuke blikvanger kopen. Secondhanddesign: een must voor de modebewuste consument.

The Snooshies are handmade from a soft and beautiful fabric, unlike any other. Hidden from most of the world by its remote location in the mountainous Himalayan regions of Western China: 100% yak down. The fibers are hand-combed from the yaks that dwell there, whose ancient existences continue to serve as a life source for the Tibetan herders. We co-operate with Shokay who aims to source the yak fiber directly from Tibetan herders, enabling them to earn a long-term sustainable living while preserving their traditional lifestyle. We believe that by investing and reinvesting our success into the local communities, we ensure the opportunity of choice for future Tibetan generations.



Snooshy works with a team of handknitters in ChongMingIsland off of Shanghai to bring the Snooshy collection to fruition. We help to build their skill-set in a safe and healthy work environment, rewarding them fairly for their beautiful knitting talents.

Why yaks?: Yaks are a majestic animal that live in mountainous areas above 10,000 feet, where few animals can survive in harsh conditions. There are only 14 million yaks in the world, of which 13 million are found in Western China. Yaks are the lifeline of Tibetan people. Their outer guard hairs are used to make waterproof tents and ropes; their soft inner down is used to make clothing and blankets; their milk is made into yak butter; their backs are used to carry heavy items; and their meat is consumed as a source for protein. Yak down is a luxury fiber that is relatively unknown to the fashion and children world. Unlike wool, the scales of yak fiber are in a waved mosaic pattern, resulting in a very smooth and soft fiber that does not itch. Why? Of course yaks!
